Shiatsu Massage for Pregnancy
Shiatsu is a form of massage that originates from Japan. Like acupuncture, its theory is based on the Eastern energetic view of the body. It acts to rebalance the body’s energy channels to promote and support well being, good health and prevent illness.
Shiatsu can be a good preparation for the journey of motherhood and for the major transition of birth both for the mother and father. It can help to alleviate most of the common aliments of pregnancy, such as morning sickness, carpal tunnel syndrome, back and neck ache. It can help mother to bond with her baby in the womb. It can help the mother become more aware of and in tune with her needs.
Shiatsu can help a woman feel more connected with the intense emotions labour brings up and assist with pain relief through the birth. Postnatally, it can support mother in establishing breastfeeding and is extremely useful for preventing and treating postnatal depression. Mother and father can also be shown how to use Shiatsu on their baby which helps strengthen their family bond.

Seated Acupressure Bodywork
Seated acupressure body work is a massage given through the clothes of a client who is laid on a massage table or seated in a specially designed chair. The acupressure bodywork sequence I use is based on the Traditional Chinese massage called anma. Anma literally means push-pull or press-rub in Chinese. The routine covers the back, neck, shoulders, head, arms and hands of the client. The routines involve the use of a variety of acupressure points as well as stretches and joint mobilisations and is a revitalising, tonifying and uplifting experience. The routines promote a sense of wellbeing because muscles relax, blood circulation is increased and nerve responses are stimulated. Additionally, the organs of the body are tonified via the meridian system and acupressure points.

Common experiences following bodywork.
Bodywork is a holistic therapy. As the body adjusts itself back to balance after a treatment there is sometimes a reaction whereby the client may feel worse before they begin to feel better and positive outcomes and benefits of the treatment are felt. What this means is that you may experience some responses that are a natural part of the healing process. You may feel some of the following symptoms:
- Headache, migraine
- Cold/flu symptoms
- Lethargy
- Muscle aches
- Heightened emotions
Many of these are common to other complementary therapies. These transitional responses will vary according to the client’s physical and emotional condition and are a result of the massage taking effect. They will typically pass within 24 – 48 hours.
Shiatsu Treatment
What is Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy. The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. For many reasons Ki can stop flowing freely and this produces a symptom. A Shiatsu practitioner will consider your state of health, symptoms and energy levels and will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow.
- Back pain
- Headache, migraine
- Whiplash injuries and neck stiffness
- Joint pain and reduced mobility
- Menstrual problems
- Digestive problems
- Asthmatic problems
- Sports injuries
What to expect from a treatment
Each session lasts approximately one hour. It usually takes place on a padded fouton at floor level although a massage bench can be used. The client stays fully clothed and the practitioner uses a variety of techniques including holding, pressing, rotation and stretches to restore energy flows. Following a treatment, there can be a feeling of increased vitality and you may feel invigorated yet relaxed.
